The PhD programme in History and Transmission of Cultural Heritage is an advanced training programme designed to produce scholars capable of combining excellence in humanities research with innovation in the promotion and dissemination of cultural heritage, using an interdisciplinary approach and cutting-edge tools.
The PhD
The PhD programme in History and Transmission of Cultural Heritage offers a third-cycle course of study designed to train scholars capable of conducting advanced humanities research in an independent and interdisciplinary manner, combining scientific research with cultural mediation and public engagement. Alongside academic training, the programme aims to prepare qualified professionals in the planning and promotion of cultural heritage, both tangible and intangible.
The three-year programme includes advanced courses, seminars, lectures and practical workshops to develop methodological, theoretical and historiographical skills. It also covers strategies and tools for scientific communication and the dissemination of humanities knowledge, with a particular focus on digital technologies.
Learning objectives
The PhD programme in History and Transmission of Cultural Heritage aims to train scholars capable of independently conducting advanced research in the humanities, adopting a rigorous and interdisciplinary methodological approach. The main objective is to provide PhD students with a solid theoretical, methodological and historiographical grounding, enabling them to make original contributions to the development of scientific research in the humanities.
Alongside the academic dimension, the PhD programme also aims to develop transferable skills focused on cultural mediation and the dissemination of knowledge, training highly qualified professionals in the field of planning and promoting cultural heritage, both tangible and intangible. The programme is designed to foster full integration between pure and applied research, with particular attention to scientific communication practices and the dissemination of humanities knowledge within the social fabric.
The teaching activities, spread over a three-year period, include advanced courses, seminars, lecture series and laboratory-based research, and are designed to provide PhD students with critical tools and communication techniques suited to different contexts, including through the use of the latest information technologies.
Career opportunities
The PhD programme aims to train scholars capable of pursuing a variety of career paths, both within academia and in broader cultural, institutional and educational contexts. In addition to preparing highly qualified researchers to continue their academic work at universities and in advanced research centres, the programme aims to develop transferable skills to facilitate entry into various sectors.
In particular, the PhD programme aims to train specialised professionals for employment in fields such as:
- publishing, periodicals, cinema and theatre, in roles related to cultural production and dissemination;
- institutions responsible for the protection and promotion of cultural heritage, such as libraries, archives, museums and heritage authorities, including in the field of heritage digitisation;
- cultural and educational bodies and organisations, with expertise in the design and management of educational and outreach activities;
- fields of cultural education and advanced teaching, including in an interdisciplinary context;
- archaeological excavations, museums and collections, training experts capable of designing and implementing initiatives to enhance and promote cultural resources, both tangible and intangible.
In this way, the PhD programme offers a broad and comprehensive education, capable of meeting the needs of a labour market increasingly oriented towards culture, conservation and innovation in the processes of knowledge transfer.

PhD students' opinions
Every year, Vanvitelli University conducts a survey to gather feedback from PhD students at the end of each academic year, with the aim of gathering information on the various aspects of the research training program and the services and opportunities that accompany it.
- For the I and II year, access to the evaluation questionnaire is via the University’s institutional credentials, and complete anonymity of responses is guaranteed - Go to the teaching evaluation questionnaire
-
For the III year, the end-of-course evaluation questionnaire is managed by Alma Laurea and can be accessed once the PhD student has registered, prior to the final examination - Go to the questionnaire
Results
- For the I and II year: PhD Student Opinions (SISVALDIDAT system)
- For the III year: PhD students’ opinions (AlmaLaurea)
In addition, the AlmaLaurea inter-university consortium compiles annual data on behalf of the University regarding PhD graduates’ academic trajectories and employment status after obtaining their degree.
